These two words conjure up soothing images of forested vistas, white sand beaches, swiftly-flowing rivers, hunting, fishing, camping, biking, hiking and a myriad of outdoor activities.

People usually refer to Northern Michigan vacations as vacationing “up north”, but where exactly is “up north?”
The southern boundary of the region is not really THAT defined. Roughly put, when you look at the mitten-shaped map of Michigan, you will be able to find “up north” by finding the middle part of the state.
From Muskegon on the west to Bay City on the east is the so-called dividing line. “Up north” is any area on or above this line. The line could be higher depending on whom you ask. Northern residents’ idea of the southern boundary line is higher, usually above Mount Pleasant.
When planning your Northern Michigan vacations, you can raise your expectations as high as you want, and you will still not get disappointed.

Northern Michigan vacations are often confused with a vacation in the Upper Peninsula, or the “UP” as it is commonly referred to. Although geographically, the Upper Peninsula is the northern part of Northern Michigan, the Upper Peninsula is not part of the Northern Michigan definition. In fact, it is safe to say that Northern Michigan vacations are a gateway to other beautiful vacation spots in the Upper Peninsula.
On the other hand, why do we have to bother with lines, and where they should start or end?
